A Bicentennial Record of D Napier & Son
This is your chance to learn about the Company whose development of piston engines peaked with the world famous Deltic. In 2008 the company that was D Napier & Son will be 200 years old. In 1808 Napiers started producing printing presses and weighing machines for the Bank of England. Today Siemens Turbomachinery manufacture Napier turbochargers and GKN Transparencies Ltd produce a descendant of the Napier Spraymat. When you consider that Charles Rolls owned a Napier motor car before he started his business with ‘Royce’ you get a feel of the pedigree of this Company! Napier Lion aero engines powered a huge number of aircraft between the wars and were also used for many land, air and sea records at that time. The Napier Sabre powered the Hawker Tempest & Typhoon aircraft that came to such prominence in the final years of WW2.
A few years after the war the Deltic was born and this book gives you an indication of the Deltic range along with the applications that exceeded a mere 22 diesel locomotives! Did you know for example that 1, 3, 9, 15, 18 and 24 cylinder examples were proposed or actually produced! The D18-25B rail traction engine was a mere 1650 hp however an 18 cylinder Deltic engine was capable and developed to produce over 4000 hp from the same basic engine size! Developed for marine applications Deltic engines were used to power the US Navy PTF Nasty boats that were involved at the beginning of the Vietnam War. The design was also used for the New York Fire Brigades Superpumper, the worlds most powerful land based fire extinguisher! Applications also include generators for radio stations to a proposed compressor for ICBM silos during the cold war.
Every Napier enthusiast should purchase this long awaited complete and detailed history of the Company to appreciate the important roll that D Napier & Son played in precision engineering over the last 200 years.
