 Baby Deltic Project
Work has started on the project to return the only remaining T9-29 (ex-Baby Deltic) engine and generator to working order. The engine is privately owned and the project is very much an 'ad-hoc' one undertaken with no specific timescale and a goal (at the moment) of simply ascertaining whether a return to operation is possible. This album will be updated as progress demands.
After purchase, the power unit was moved to safe (as well as warm and dry)storage courtesy of MAN BW Ltd in Colchester - formerly Paxman Diesels.

Warm and dry at last after many years in the open. The crankcase covers (and the oil filter cover) were missing on purchase, new ones were kindly provided by MAN BW Ltd.

Out in the cold again, albeit temporarily - waiting to get lifted onto a DPS Warflat before being shunted into the new Depot.

At Barrow Hill with a T18-37K (ex PTF boat) on the left, the doughnut shaped object on the 37K is part of the exhaust system.

Complete with it's 'new' crankcase covers, baby enjoys the sunshine.

Excellent shot of the complete power unit.

After doing nothing for so many years, baby is craned again for the third time in 12 months.

Don't panic Mr Mainwaring! The piece hanging off is just a bit of packing.

The power unit seen after an initial flurry of work in 2003 - removing exhaust manifolds and injectors to allow much penetrating oil to be injected in an attempt to free off the engine. The auxiliary generator was removed to allow the engine to fit in the doors of the Depot!

Seen on the day that work restarted in 2007, the top sandwich piece has been removed and (unseen) the engine driven fan which draws cooling air through the main generator. Fitters friend on top of the generator!

A view of the coupling between the engine and the generator, with the fan removed.

The generator can now be seen to be separate from the engine, for the first time since the late 1960's.

A view of the coupling, after the generator was separated. The nylon ratchet strap is a temporary measure to support the armature while the generator was removed.

Looking on AB crankcase. After many years working on 18-cylinder engines, it still seems a little odd to see such a short crankshaft. The rusty round object on the right of the crankshaft is the torsional vibration damper. The round aperture with the cross-bracing is the air intake.

Looking on A bank. With the exhaust manifold removed the exhaust ports can clearly be seen.
