     Baby Deltic Project

A nice threequarter view of the 'pastiche engine', watch this space for the real thing soon.
    Viewed: 694 times.
A pastiche shot of the engine looking more complete than it actually is. It was assembled and held together with minimal fasteners to look good for the recent Barrow Hill gala. Looks good? The real thing will follow shortly.
    Viewed: 651 times.
Another view of the same pump, seen keeping an injector company.
    Viewed: 651 times.
More progress, the overhauled fuel pumps and injectors have been received back from Colchester Fuel Injection, the visible quality of the work can be seen here, especially when compared with photo 54 earlier in the gallery.
    Viewed: 645 times.
A view from the free end looking at the newly installed phasing case. Next job is to phase and time the crankshafts, then time the camshafts Following this the free-end gearbox, sandwich piece and turbo can be installed. Note the addition (in felt-tip!) of identification and direction of rotation to the damper covers and cyliner blocks. This is to remove errors when timing - it all seems easy sitting and reading the notes but when it's actually being done it is easy to make errors, especially given that the bottom crankshaft rotates in the opposite direction to the top two....
    Viewed: 694 times.
And half an hour later, with the phasing case in place and secured with a dozen or so nuts. Compare this picture with photo 97 from earlier in the gallery to see the progress to date. Add to the visible progress about 40 hours of unseen work and the scale of the project becomes clearer.
    Viewed: 627 times.
A final look at the drive end of the engine prior to the installation of the phasing case.
    Viewed: 545 times.
The phasing case has been reassembled, seen here suspended prior to lifting into the VDA.
    Viewed: 575 times.
    BC similarly.
    Viewed: 584 times.
AB crankshaft after installation and following the connection of the con-rods. Note the tool for turning the crankshaft, hanging off the drive end gear. It picks up on the same gear as the drive quill shaft.
    Viewed: 650 times.
Tops of exhaust pistons, seen through the exhaust ports of A bank.
    Viewed: 609 times.
B3 exhaust piston being installed. Note the many small cuts and grazes on the skilled fitters hands - engines bite!
    Viewed: 774 times.
BC crankshaft seen just after being lowered into position, with the main bearing caps in place but not yet secured. Tomorrow will see the last (AB) crankshaft installed and all the con-rods connected up.
    Viewed: 597 times.
Looking throught the exhaust ports at C bank exhaust pistons. Why are all the pistons in the same position? Because they are yet to be connected to the crankshaft.
    Viewed: 582 times.
More pistons going in today, this is after the first one went in B bank (top) with A bank below it.
    Viewed: 612 times.
