An oblique view of the crankshafts, the right hand one has been cleaned to a degree. Look at the difference between the webs on the two outer crankshafts. The long tie-bolts are from the bottom crankcase and are longer than all the others (not shown) because they pass through the engine mount pick ups. Look at the outer teeth on the gears too, these gears drive the cam-shafts, the inner gears are the drive to the phasing case and therefore transmit 1/3rd of the engine power. Viewed: 707 times.
|
| The three crankshafts on their cleaning stands on a pallet. The middle one is CA - from the bottom position in the engine - and is not corroded at all, the other two are therefore from the top and have suffered a little. The large round objects on the opposite end to the gearwheel is a torsional vibration damper, there are two dampers on a 9-cylinder engine compared to one on an 18- as a result of the smoother operational characteristics of the 18-. Twice the bangs per revolution, see?
Picture 31 (earlier in the album) shows the 'as removed' condition.

On it's own now, the bare engine triangle stands in front of the VDA, just visible in the background. I'll put a better photo up in due course. Viewed: 628 times.

| The VDA will carry the power unit when it is complete. Over the next few months the power unit will be built into the VDA - at the moment it is simply being used as a store to free up space within the Depot. Seen left to right are the main generator carcase and armature (both covered up), the aux generator and traction motor blower assembly and two stillages containing all the minor assemblies. Behind the photographer and not seen here are the two halves of the phasing gearbox and the turbocharger. Viewed: 614 times.
|
| On 29th December, all of the parts (except the actual triangle) were moved into the newly acquired carrier vehicle - a VDA generously donated to the project by the DPS. Viewed: 628 times.

| The phasing case has been split. Seen here only a few moments after being exposed to daylight for the first time in years is the drive-end half-case complete with gears. Viewed: 850 times.

| The other half (strange angle as it's still suspended.....) seen with the crankshaft driven gears still attached. Viewed: 771 times.

|
| Work has started on splitting the phasing case for inspection purposes, the quillshaft closest to the camera has had the hub gear removed, the other two are (in what is now becoming expected fashion) not as willing to come apart. Wait for another 'this phrase hides two weeks work' style caption.... Viewed: 760 times.
