Day 1 was getting to Lands End. Not easy when relying on Cross Country Trains on a Bank Holiday Monday.

Anyway, no engineering work planned, a confirmed bike space on a Voyager from Chesterfield to Penzance and an Advance Purchase ticket booked weeks ago. What could go wrong?

The 14.06 from Chesterfield which is a Glasgow/Edinburgh to Penzance train left Leeds at around 13.10. Unfortunately everyone at the Leeds Festival got on it there so at Chesterfield it proved rather tricky to actually get a person and a bag on the train, let alone a racing bike.

Cross Country then decided that it would be a great idea to terminate the train at Exeter St Davids because of a crew shortage (recorded as going to happen on Live Departure Boards at 12 noon) even though they hadn't bothered to tell Network Rail or indeed their own staff on the train.

Thank goodness for First Great Western who have a fleet of proper trains with space for bikes and people.

Arrival in Penzance one hour later than scheduled at 21.30 but at least Cross Country will have to refund part of the fare for being late and they also failed in their attempt to scupper the whole trip before it started.

My son Ian Kennan, who is 20 years old, is going to cycle from Lands End to John O'Groats from 30th August to 12th September this year. He has never attempted a long distance cycle ride and it is a daunting prospect to cycle so far in such a short amount of time.
