Wednesday 2nd Oct was a very busy day with lots of different sub groups working towards their own goals. The Delectricians were again busy on D9015 and managed to sort the circuits in the loco for the compressors and upon start up they kicked in, slight leak on No 2 pipework but fixed Saturday and the loco was able to build up air and with all the relevant equipment working correctly, cut off valve worked correctly....Vacuum Exhausters next.
Work continued on unit 430 with the Fuel Injectors having new seals fitted due some of the previous ones being fitted incorrectly several years ago it was decided to replace all of them. Coolant was slowly added to search for leaks, a few were found and rectified before time ran out to complete the task.
Another step forward was that we had 2 of our Phasing Cases collected to go away to a company who contacted us following the issues we had with 417 in 15 on Sat 3rd August. We have sent the case from 430 as they advised us against fitting a case that had not worked since the late 80's as there may be issues with seals etc, we also sent the case from 415 which went to Paxmans in the early 2000's during our VSOE contract for assessment for refurbishment but was deemed too expensive for the VSOE Company to restore to Zero hours and returned as a kit of parts. The Company visited BH the previous week and examined this Phasing case and found it to be in good condition and worthy of a rebuild and also as something to use to Reverse Engineer any parts required for 417's 430's or 423's and 451's if required.
We have also had an offer from another company to attend BH and do an internal inspection with a borescope on 451 from 55009 to try to identify the problems. They are willing to take it to their workshop to effect the repair, if required.

SATURDAY 5th OCTOBER.
Work started on the manufacture of the replacement cab flooring for D9015 No 1 cab, No2 is already done. We are using a product which is fire retardant underneath and oil & grease resistant on the top surface to make it compliant with modern requirements. All panels were cut, the trim just needs cleaning before fitting, as per the No 2 cab they will be stored until the loco is finished.
D9015. The Delctricians spent some time checking out the circuits for the Exhauster's and Traction Motor Blowers and it was found that like the compressors the Neutral wires were either not connected or on the wrong terminal. The loco was started on No 1 engine and all these items came to life and worked as required. The loco will now go back inside as the next part on the job will take several weeks.
55009 since the locos return earlier in the year we have not had the opportunity to carry out further investigations to the failure. The engine was barred over to see what was moving and what not. The fan drive shafts both rotated as required and so did the auxiliary generator but unfortunately the main generator was not moving at all, thus pointing to a possible failure of a gear between the engine and generator, further investigations to be carried out.
STORES. A couple of volunteers spent some time going through the crates containing the parts from 415 which was returned from Paxmans in 2003 as a 'kit of parts'. The main focus was to fine the 3 Quill Shafts in case they are needed for 417, 2 were found but unfortunately there was no logical system to the packing and all like for like items are not together so the work will continue.
On the subject of our stock of spares I have had contact with a new volunteer who manages stores for a large engineering company and he has offered to take on the role of organising our stores once he retires early next year, in the meantime he will visit and start to have a good look around the stores to help him plan. He has also offered to provide a software system which he currently uses and is conversant with so we can upload everything and have locations and part numbers available .
NOTE THE DEPOT WILL BE CLOSED ON SATURDAY 12th OCTOBER.
